Death Note, by Tsugumi Ohba, is (for lack of a better word) a very interesting manga. Not you're average shounen storyline, but not the least bit deficient in action. The story takes place in the year 2002 (?) in Japan. University student Yagami Light (original Japanese translation: Raito), finds a death note, accompanied by a shinigami, Ryuuku. From there, the series of (mis)adventures begins. The artwork is a gorgeous blend of realism with the animé style. The storyline deals with very serious and even dark matters and the plot is so tightly woven you could strangle a fly in it (not that you'd want to). No spoilers so go read the manga and find out for yourself why it's so goshdarn good.
BTW - Correct me if I'm wrong about anything (the date especially, which I got from adding and subtracting the years the characters say). This is the information that I got from the story (fan-translated, online available version, not the American published version).
